[outward]
expression of self (who they try to be, who they want people to think they are)
interaction with others (socialization (introvert? extrovert? ambivert?), conflicts (what are they, how are they handled))
interaction with world (processing information, conflicts, effects of nurture)

[inward]
interaction with self (thought processes, self-esteem/worth)
motivations (fears, morality, desires, dreams, subconscious workings)
contradictions (with desires, with fears, with self, with others, with world)

[questions to keep in mind]
who do they try to make people think they are?
who do they think they are?
what are they wrong about in who they think they are?
how much do they like to be around people?
how much do they need to be around people?
how do they process the world?
what makes them?
what breaks them?
what carries them through when they break?
what do they think they want?
what do they REALLY want?
what do they think they DON'T want?
what are they scared of? (what do they REALLY NOT want?)
how do they try to get what they want?
what keeps them from what they want?
how do they deal with what keeps them from what they want?

[things to remember]
+ overlapping points is okay and encouraged! that makes it flow!

+ emphasize traits important to the characterization! for some characters it's more important that they're an introvert; for others, it's more important how they interact with the world.

+ re: socialization -- sometimes, canon only shows us how they are in certain situations. sometimes, they are forced into isolation or forced to be around people. in this case, try to think of how they might behave IF THEY HAD THE CHOICE. would they seek people out? if they're feeling bad, would they feel better being around people? (this would more than likely make them an extrovert.) if they're feeling bad, would they much rather be alone? would they need time alone to recharge their energy after being around people? (this more than likely makes them an introvert.) what would make them happiest? what would they default to?

+ "strengths" and "weaknesses" is for losers. in reality, a "strength" can also be a "weakness" and visa versa in a person.

+ that said, yes, balance is important. you can't just focus on the things that make them "good." they are cheerful and good with people and sweet-natured! this just paints a flat picture and doesn't explore the other parts of the character. you want a WELL-ROUNDED character, prove that they are a person in their own right!
("good" is an example. this applies to "bad," too. if they are irredeemably evil, you need to be able to show the mods that you can have them do things other than Be Evil.)

+ if canon only gives you a flat picture, emphasize what makes them try so hard to be good (or bad); emphasize motivations (fears, desires, etc.), because that will give them the depth you need.

+ remember to always explore WHY. WHY does this character have this trait? where does this behavior come from?

+ showing room for character development is always a big plus!!! it shows that you have plans for this character and places you'd like to take them! WELL-WRITTEN CHARACTERS ARE DYNAMIC CHARACTERS.
(exception: some characters canonically do not develop but remain the same always. THIS IS OKAY!! this is usually to play foil to other characters/the theme of the world/the theme of the story/to emphasize themes/etc.! if this is the case, EXPLAIN THIS AND WHY THEY ARE THIS WAY NARRATIVELY so the mods know where you're coming from! remember to emphasize what you want to accomplish with this character despite remaining level in terms of development!)

[fun personality aids]
the Dæmon Page Forums
+ Dæmon: an externalization of your subconscious that takes on the form of an animal that metaphorically represents your personality.
+ Keep in mind that things are currently in a "rehaul" mode. Also keep in mind that A LOT of the old analyses are very literal. If need be, don't be afraid to your own research and analysis of traits! There are a lot of threads discussing analyses of traits, some older and based on older methods, some newer with a different and more "current" approach.
+ You ARE BY NO MEANS restricted to how the forum does things! If you want to embrace a lot more of mythology and lore into your characters' dæmon forms, that's okay! This is just a tool to help explore and express your character!
+ General Analyses
+ Analysis Index

MBTI/Myers-Biggs
+ How information from the world is taken in, processed, what is done with it, and how it's expressed.
+ There are multiple tests!! It doesn't hurt to take more than one for cross-referencing. The one I link below is just my current favorite.
+ This test is quicker than others AND more importantly offers a sliding scale for answers.

Enneagrams
+ What is desired? What is feared? How are these things expressed?
+ Very dynamic! There is a primary type, and a secondary type (called a "wing"), as well as three interaction focuses (self-preservation, social, 'sexual' (no, not like that)). When stressed, one type may exhibit the traits of another type. When undergoing character growth, that same type may exhibit the traits of yet another type!
+ Tests are reported to not be very reliable as they ask "externally-focused" questions instead of "internally-focused" ones. Better to just read the types and figure it out yourself.
+ To pick a place to start, I suggest reading about the triads.

Eastern Zodiac
+ Based on birth year. (It's mathematical, so if your character has a far-future or far-past birthday, you're still cool. Here is a calculator!)
+ Each animal also has an element for more variations!

Western Zodiac
+ Based on your birth day, month, time of birth, etc.
+ Full charts are pretty expansive but most of the time people just focus on sun signs (the one you typically think of when you think "zodiac sign").
+ Cusps are a thing! (aka being born under two signs, not just one)
